The Village Has Been Named a Holleran Choice Community—A Top Benchmark for Senior Living

Village Germantown 077 Holleran Award

Fine amenities, engaging activities and tasty food are all great … but do they tell the whole story about a senior living community like The Village at Germantown? Holleran Community Engagement Research and Consulting doesn’t think so.

For over 30 years, Holleran has been taking a deeper dive into how residents think, act and feel about their senior living experience. Understanding their perceptions and how they interact with their community truly gets to the heart of a community’s identity.

We’re honored to announce that The Village at Germantown has been named a Holleran Choice Community for Resident Engagement and Resident Satisfaction. This national benchmark honors the strong relationships, vibrant culture and fulfilling lifestyle that energize our community every day—and make it feel like family.

Why Does Holleran Focus So Strongly on Resident Engagement?

Engagement captures how well communities like The Village recognize and act upon the higher-level expectations of today’s residents. When paired with traditional questions about satisfaction, measuring engagement unlocks insights about how communities foster a sense of purpose and connection.

Based on decades of research by Holleran, Resident Engagement hinges on four key criteria: voice, connection, fulfillment and well-being. All are associated with benefits such as greater longevity, improved cognitive and physical wellness, and increased satisfaction with life. Let’s take a closer look at how all four are woven into the fabric of life at The Village.

Voice: Having a Say and Making a Difference

Today’s vibrant seniors want more than just updates from their community’s staff members and leadership team. They want to provide input, share feedback and ensure that decisions are made in a timely, transparent fashion. That’s what voice is all about, and The Village scored in the 95th percentile—better than 95% of other senior living communities—for this key Resident Engagement benchmark.

It’s easy to see why. For starters, our Resident Council Team collaborates closely with management to make sure any issues are addressed and that our community truly feels like home. Members of our resident committees also make their voices heard as they keep their fingers on the pulse of dining, groundskeeping and other aspects of daily life. “Part of my time is spent talking to residents about their suggestions regarding landscaping and repairs,” explains Jim, a member of our building and grounds committee. “I do whatever I can to make sure things are kept up.”

Connection: Cultivating Emotional Bonds

Meaningful activities and pursuits, shared with others, can help combat social isolation among seniors, which is why connection is also an integral part of Holleran’s measure of Resident Engagement. Connection represents the degree to which a community makes it easy for residents to create and maintain family-like bonds and a social support network that are a key to aging well.

So, how did our Germantown senior living community fare? Once again, The Village ranked in the 95th percentile. For starters, we offer plenty of activities, events and clubs for every interest under the sun, plus plenty of spaces where friends can meet, greet and eat. But one thing our community doesn’t have is cliques. Everybody fits in here. As one Holleran survey respondent put it: “The fact that the residents all try to make you comfortable really hits to the core of accepting and enjoying your home. You engage in so many interesting things and meet welcoming residents.”

Fulfillment: Maintaining a Sense of Purpose

From learning a new language to pursuing a favorite passion to fighting for a cause, purpose fuels vitality, particularly during retirement. When Holleran Consulting evaluates this dimension of Resident Engagement, they analyze how a community fosters an environment in which residents can work toward goals, meaningfully contribute and maintain continuity with the life they had before moving in.

When the results were tabulated, The Village ranked in the 95th percentile for cultivating fulfillment and purpose, which comes as no surprise to the people who live here. One survey respondent wrote: “We are encouraged and stretched to develop new skills and use those we already have.”

Take Sue, for example. This avid golfer continued her decades-long passion for putting after moving to The Village and even took part in the annual Germantown Golf Classic. Our resident thespians are busy honing their craft, too. Recently, our drama club staged an intrigue-filled murder mystery—and even designed the sets from scratch.

Well-Being: Staying Healthy and Whole

Well-being goes beyond physical health and cognitive functioning—it embraces whole-person wellness—including mental, social and spiritual health. That’s why Holleran Consulting looks closely at how a community supports residents as they age by offering resources to help them adapt to changing life circumstances.

The Village had its strongest showing in this aspect of Resident Engagement, ranking in the 96th percentile. Here’s a small sampling of what survey respondents had to say:

“The staff is definitely committed to my health and well-being. Outstanding!”

“[We appreciate] the opportunity to engage in spiritual growth offerings, especially Chaplain Spink’s contributions.”

“The food is outstanding for sure. The huge variety of activities [keeps] us involved in physical, cognitive and spiritual health.”

Our holistic approach to integrating the seven dimensions of wellness into day-to-day life helps every member of The Village family make their latest chapter their best chapter.
