Beyond the Myths: The Wonderful Truth About Retirement Living

Today’s society is very familiar with the period of life known as retirement, but that doesn’t mean society gets to determine what your retirement lifestyle looks like. There will always be various opinions and even myths about retirement, but until you get there, how do you know what it’s actually like?

Think about how unique your life right now is compared to everyone else’s in your community. No two people have the exact same combination of friends, family, jobs, interests and hobbies, so why would everyone’s lifestyles suddenly become the same in retirement? They wouldn’t, and we want to explain why here on our retirement lifestyle blog. Let’s forget the retirement myths and talk about the truth of what it’s like to live your golden years in a retirement community like ours.

Why Plan Ahead for Retirement Living?

Retirement doesn’t always happen exactly when or how we think it will. Sometimes health conditions, family needs or other personal factors make our usual routines more difficult, and retirement becomes the option that is best at a certain time in our lives. It’s also wise to keep in mind that moving and acclimating to a new community is much easier when you’re active and healthy.

With those things considered, it’s never too early to start planning and preparing for retirement living. Just making plans doesn’t mean you have to make the transition right away. We even have a waiting list program that will allow you to experience a taste of the Village life before you officially join us.

Retirement Planning Isn’t Strictly Financial

Speaking of retirement planning, let’s discuss what that entails. When you hear the term “retirement planning,” it might conjure up the image of a financial advisor discussing your assets and investments and how they will provide for you in the future.

Truthfully, retirement planning is about much more than banking. There are actually many questions for you to consider and answer.

How will you fill your time? Are there new things you want to learn and do that you have never had time to try? From tai chi and line dancing to poker games and movie showings, there is always something going on in our bustling retirement community.

This is the most exciting part about entering retirement: making a mental (or actual) list of what you want to do when you don’t have to go to work every day. There may be more activities that you discover when you actually enter retirement, and it’s absolutely alright to expand your “want to do” list. We just encourage you to go ahead and start thinking about the possibilities, because it can make the transition to retirement easier and more enjoyable!

You Don’t Have to Retire Out of Town

During your retirement planning period, one of the biggest things to consider is where you’re going to retire. The truth is, not everyone moves away to somewhere like Florida for retirement, and that’s perfectly alright. In fact, we would love for you to stay here in town with us! If your children and grandchildren are here, we bet they would say the same thing.

Where you choose to retire really comes down to wherever you feel comfortable and happy. That place just might be Germantown or Memphis, where you may have grown up, raised a family or spent most of your career. Even if you haven’t lived here for long, we encourage you to take a look at our recent blog post to learn about the benefits of retiring in Germantown.

Stay as Active as You Want!

Some professionals worry that they will be bored without work when they retire. What they don’t realize is that in retirement, you get to choose how active you want to be, which is arguably even better than just being “busy” with jobs, responsibilities and chores. If you feel like taking it easy sometimes, it won’t be because you don’t have anything else to do. If you feel like being out and about, we have plenty of opportunities for you to do that as well.

Some people are also concerned that they will feel lonely without the coworkers and neighbors they’re used to seeing every day. Remember though, in today’s world of technology, it will be easier than you think to stay in touch with old friends during retirement.

Plus, when you move to a retirement community like the Village, you will be gaining friends, not losing them. We also have plenty of planned family events for you and your children and grandchildren to attend together, like the Mother’s Day Tea and the “Art is Ageless” Family Art Show.
