A Year in Review: The Village at Germantown

There is always something going on at The Village at Germantown, and we love how our residents stay busy and active, especially during the holiday season. Before we head into 2016 though, we wanted to take this last blog post of the year as an opportunity to reflect on the great things that have happened in our community during 2015.

Maybe you’re a current Village resident who can enjoy reminiscing over these memories along with us. Perhaps you’re considering moving to the Village and want to see the highlights of our past twelve months. Either way, read on and we can promise you a taste of Village life in 2015.

The Village Blog Begins

The blog that you’re reading right now was launched in 2015! So, how do you like it? We love our retirement community blog for many reasons. We see The Village Blog as an investment in the future of our community.

While the website provides general, necessary information on our services and amenities, the blog supplements that content with an inside look at everyday life at The Village. On the blog, we can convey the character of our staff, the personalities of our residents, our endless variety of activities and the closeness of our community. This provides prospective residents and their families with another avenue to get to know us before move-in day, or to get a feel for what life at the Village is like so they can decide if our retirement community is the best place for them to call home.

We also like to use The Village Blog to provide thoughtful responses to some of the questions we receive from prospective residents and their families. If you haven’t had a chance to read through our posts yet, we encourage you to do so!

Honored to Serve in 2015

We started the year in January accepting the Germantown Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Large Business of the Year Award sponsored by Metropolitan Bank. We were extremely honored to receive this recognition and are constantly striving to serve the city of Germantown in the best ways we can. This was extra special to us because it is actually given in memory of Charlie McCraw, whom we knew and loved as a frequent Village visitor of his mother, Mrs. Nancy McGraw.

Then in November, we were recognized by the Commercial Appeal as one of the “Top Workplaces of the Year”! The kindness of the residents and the fun spirit of our community really do make The Village a wonderful, rewarding place to work. If you’re interested in joining our team in 2016, please visit the Village careers page here on our website.

The Village 10th Anniversary

Can you believe the Village has been around for a decade now? We celebrated our 10th Anniversary this year in true Village style, with a fabulous feast, great entertainment and fellowship, and even a round of carriage rides! Thanks to all of our residents and their families, as well as our supporters and staff for making The Village at Germantown into an unforgettable retirement experience. Here’s to the next decade...and many more!

The Sunshine Volunteer Group

Many of our independent living residents have often expressed interest in getting involved with our assisted living program and bringing smiles to the faces of their fellow residents in Healthcare at the Village. This year, those residents formed the Sunshine Team, a volunteer group that regularly calls on residents facing health challenges. The Sunshine Team brings a “ray of sunshine” to our assisted living residents in the form of kind words, cheerful smiles, special snacks and fun surprises.

The way our Villagers care about one another is truly remarkable. We’re proud that this year, the strength of our retirement community brought together such a wonderful group for such a thoughtful mission. Keep up the great work, Sunshine Team!

The Village Dogs

At the end of this year, we remember our sweet golden retriever Lady. For four years, she was a beloved member of the Village community, and her warmth and gentle demeanor were always appreciated by our residents and will never be forgotten.

This past spring, we were happy to welcome our precious new canine companion, Sally. An eight year old golden retriever from the Memphis Area Golden Retriever Rescue, Sally is a delightful addition to our administrative offices and a wonderful walking companion for our residents.

Germantown Retirement Community Expansion

In August, we announced the addition of a new, three story wing of 31 single, double and triple bedroom apartment units for Independent Living. The expansion will also include a 38-space underground parking garage and a new office for the marketing department. With this expansion, we plan to accommodate some of the 45 members of our waiting list.

In September, we opened our brand new 52,000 square foot Assisted Living center. We celebrated with a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Mayor Mark Luttrell, William Kenley, and Ron Rukstad, followed by an open house tour of the new building. Throughout the construction, we were thankful for the Building and Grounds Committee’s input, and for their communication of the construction progress to their fellow residents.

Other enhancements to the Village campus during 2015 include new security gates, a kitchen and laundry expansion, and renovation of the old Assisted Living center to house additional Skilled Nursing suites. All of that to say, the Village at Germantown has grown tremendously in 2015, and we certainly have plans to keep improving the Village experience in 2016.
